I recently visited Are, having been there once before. The first time I went I had a nice time however the higher region was only open for 2/6 days due to what they called high winds (12m/s), this skiing was good however the lifts at the top have been designed in such a way that if the wind exceeds 10m/s they remain shut. The best skiing is at the top which is very frustrating furthermore the website says 108/114 slopes open however only about these are accesible by lift!! Very misleading, I recently visited and the higher region was shut for 6/6 days! The wind was between 8-14m/s and on the last day it was calm enough for it to open however it was too icy for the lifts to function! The lifts kept shutting all week and it took the lift operators a long time to get them going again (probably due to their average age being about 17). Good skiing in Bjornen for families, great park for people into freestyle, potentially a great resort with a variety of activities besides skiing. Shame it is ran by incompetent staff and Skistar seem more concerned with making money than customer satisfaction. Wouldn't even say it can be compared to Alpine resort such as Wengen, Chamonix, Three Valleys, La Plagne ect.... Vollständige Bewertung

Went here for a week with 18 adults and teenage kids. Rented a really nice large house a few kilometers away. The mountain has a lot of ski area, mostly intermediate, and was very kid friendly. The gondola serving the upper mountain was closed all week due to high winds, so I cannot give any info. on the upper area. There was still plenty of skiing. The bars were fun and English gets you around just fine. ... Vollständige Bewertung

I'll say from the start I didn't have the greatest time in Are, and I think if circumstances had been different it might have been better as I know your experience depends a lot on how things go on your particular trip, who you're with, where you stay, the weather etc and so I can understand other people may have a lot better time! We (Myself and my parents and my younger brithers) arrived by train and strauight away had to pay a lot for a taxi to the appartment. That was on a steep hill side so we struggled up to that with our baghs, it was OK but nothing special, a bit tatty. Ski rentals were back down the hill and all the shops and restaurants in the main centre (Which were veery nice) about half a mile away,. Everything was expensive comparedc to the alps - bnalthough the people were always friendly and it wasa a nice atmosphere. The cvjhilcare for my brother was in another part of the resort a few miles away so there was a bus ride there and it took us away from the main ski area so we got the bus back, skied a bit and then bus back to get him. Sio my memories are of long walks carrying heavy gear up steep hills and wauituing for and riding on buses everywhere. It is very speread out over many miles so be careful where you stay. If you're in the main resort centre and don't need to use childcare, feed a family etc I guess it's great. I think most Swedes arrive in their big Volvos with their cars loaded with food from home so they have no problem getting between places and eat in to save restaurant bills so you can see the plsace is kind of set up for thsat way of doing your ski holiday. ... I went to Are two years ago with my family, aged 7 to 13. We had a fabulous apartment, vast by Alpine standards, not expensive, and with its own sauna. The weather had been appalling just before we arrived, with a disastrous thaw followed by a deep freeze, which completely nixed the main cable car up to the top - they were hacking ice off it all week. Not being able to get to the highest pistes was a blow. However, there is a lot of skiing in Are, and we had snow before we arrived so conditions had improved. There are plenty of testing runs, including some good steep blacks (not difficult blacks by Alpine standards, but exciting anyway). For intermediates and beginners, there are lots of good runs, some served by drags that take you right up into vast snow-covered plateaus which are very picturesque and made my children - on their second skiing holiday - feel very adventurous! There is lots of gorgeous skiing between trees, and lots of places to be tempted into off-piste runs through the woods - bend your knees and go with the flow, but be warned that the tracks are mostly made by local teenagers who like to return to the piste whilest airborne! Very few queues, and a very easygoing atmosphere generally. Ski school was excellent - the Scandinavians really put a lot of effort into this, and it shows. Seek out the out-of-the-way mountain bars and restaurants, and have lunch one day at the hotel at the top of the funicular - or even stay there if you can afford it, it's a brilliant place! My only critcism of the ski domain is that it covers a huge area and it can take a long time to get around - long, slow linking trails that get very skiied out and T-bars that seem to take forever. Are is a lovely town to spend an evening in - plenty of good restaurants and bars. It isn't especially glamorous, but everyone is friendly and there is a good balance of locals and tourists. As usual in Scandinavian resorts, there is a huge cross-country terrain, and if you want to learn Telemark skiing, this is the place to be. A great place, then, and very different from the sometimes manic atmosphere of a big Alpine resorts. I just wish that cable car had been open as I'm sure it would have made a big difference to the skiing - both in terms of range and of getting around quickly. If you have time, the ski train from Stockholm is a wonderful way to get there and see some of the Swedish countryside from the comfort of a beech-panelled carriage.... Vollständige Bewertung
